The Standard We Hold Ourselves To

We are asked, gently and often, what makes one child care different from another when they all say the same warm things.

We think the honest answer is that excellence in early childhood is not a claim. It is a set of small decisions repeated every single day, and most of them are visible if you know where to look. Here is the standard we hold ourselves to, written plainly, so any family can measure us against it.

Every child is known by name, and known well

We stay small on purpose. Our license allows a capacity of 16, and that number is not a limitation we work around, it is the reason the care works.

When a caregiver has a small group, they learn how a particular child falls asleep, which sound means frustration and which means tiredness, which food they will try if it is next to something familiar. That knowledge cannot be scheduled. It only comes from being with the same few children, every day.

Food is made here, and it is included

Meals are homemade and included in our care, with menus adjusted for allergies and special diets.

We treat mealtime as part of the day rather than a break from it. Children serve themselves where they can, help clean up, and sit together. A child who is not eating is not a problem to be reported at pickup. It is something we work on with the family.

Families are not left guessing

Parents receive updates through the day, with photos, activities, meals, naps, and changes, through the Brightwheel app.

We believe a parent should be able to look at their phone in the middle of a workday and know their child is fine. Peace of mind is not an extra. It is part of what we are being trusted with.

Safety is specific, not decorative

Our staff are certified in CPR and first aid. Access to the building is controlled, pickup is limited to authorized adults, and we have emergency procedures we practice rather than file away.

We use cameras to document incidents rather than to stream live to families. That is a deliberate choice. A live feed would show every other family's child as well, and the privacy of one child is the privacy of all of them. What we owe families instead is a complete and honest account of anything that happens, and that is what we give.

Children are treated as capable

Our days are inspired by the Montessori and Reggio Emilia approaches. Stripped of the vocabulary, that means two things.

From Montessori: children are given real, hands-on activities they can choose, at their own pace. Pouring their own water, carrying their own plate, working on something until they finish it. Independence is built by being allowed to do things, not by being told about them.

From Reggio Emilia: children are treated as capable, creative, and curious. We follow what they are interested in rather than forcing every child through the same worksheet on the same morning.

Both of these happen in English and in Spanish, because both languages are part of the ordinary day.

We are licensed, and we are family-run

My Little Sunflower Academy has been licensed and operating since 2022, at 26 Saint Andrews Place in Yonkers, NY, caring for children from 6 weeks to 5 years, with after-school care. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

This is a family business. It was founded by Maria Laura after her own experience as a mother, leaving her one-year-old daughter at a place where no one seemed to be trying to help her eat, and deciding that other families should not have to feel that way.

That origin still sets the standard. The question we ask ourselves is not whether we are meeting the minimum. It is whether we would be at peace leaving our own child here.

How to hold us to it

Ask us the hard questions. Ask about ratios, about what happens on a bad day, about how we handled the last incident, about what a child eats on a Tuesday.

A program that is confident in its standard will answer specifically. That is the test we would want any family to apply, to us and to anyone else they are considering.
